I wish I knew about this page sooner. I read all of the condolences from many Police Departments for my brother P.O. Arthur J. Ohlsen.  Our hearts are still broken and it has been two years since he's gone. I want to thank everyone for all there support during that time it really meant a lot to us.  I want to thank you all on behalf of our family Art's friends and co-workers.  God Bless you all   Art's sister Blanche

God never gave us a word that expresses out pain and sorrow in times like this. May He bless the family and loved ones of our departed officer.

          -Det. A.E. Tokle (Ret)

          -Rockaway Twsp.P.D.

Johnny - It's been almost 4 months since you've past but like so many family and friends, I still think of you every day. I was afraid to get on the internet and read all this stuff but I'm glad I did. I got to see you in so many other ways. I think everyone has already summed up how wonderful you are and what a special friend and brother you have been to everyone including strangers. You are a rare jewel and I am so lucky to have been able to share time with you.

I have so many memories good, bad, crazy, funny. I keep flipping through the photo's as if I would forget one of the many trips or mini adventures we took together. Some of the most beautiful places we shared and I will never forget.

I don't even know what more to say except you will always be in my heart & part of my soul. I look forward to every dream I see you in. Until we meet again you big pain in my ____!!!

To all of John's family & friends: May God grant us peace in knowing Johnny is with the Lord. May everyone spread peace & kindness in memory of John's good will.

Love,

Laurie

We have lost another Brother...
It never seems to stop...
each time I see a new name on this page...
I wonder... who will be next...?
The one thing we all know for sure
there will be another...
We just don’t know where, who or when...

To my brothers and sisters in the Dover Police Department,
To the Family and Friends of Police Officer Arthur Olsen
My deepest sympathy...Rest in peace Brother...You leave us with a reminder, Tomorrow is never guaranteed. I post this in your Honor...

BLUE AUTUMN
That day was like others nothing special at all
We passed one another said hi in the hall
We took it for granted that nothing would change
But then, time seemed to gel, it felt surely strange

Suddenly the news struck with lightening heat
Officer down, my heart skipped a beat
See we’re all brothers that hang from the same family tree
But today, it was your turn; your leaf was blown free

We finally break rank and most walk away
They turn to look back, just a few there still stay
The ones from your squad still stand by and stare
Not able to leave, a pain they all share

The crowd is all gone and the wind shakes the trees
The tears start to fall like the dry autumn leaves
Why was it you and not one of them?
A question they’ll ask again and again

So now when we see our brother go by
Why not take a second to say more than just hi
Tomorrow might be too late, don’t you see
Who’s leaf will be next… blown from the tree…?

I never dreamed it would be me, My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place Alas, my name, no more my face.
"In the line of duty, " I hear them say: My family now the price to pay.
My folded flag stained with their tears; We only had those few short years.
The badge no longer on my chest, I sleep now in eternal rest.
My sword I pass to those behind, And pray they keep this thought in mind.

I never dreamed it would be me, And with heavy heart and bended knee,
I ask for all here from the past: Dear God, let my name be the last.

One year later and it is an anniversary no one wishes they knew.

You'd be so happy about all the wonderful things being done in your name and  something positive has come about: this tragedy has brought friends closer.

My only wish is that you were still here adding that bit of sparkle to the world.

I worked for the CPD for approximately five years. I knew John well. John was very respectful, very helpful and very caring. It was a pleasure to know him. It is still difficult for me to pass by the police station without thinking of John. Whenever I see a Clifton traffic officer I often hope to see John. Although he is no longer with us physically, I am quite sure he will always remain in our hearts and our thoughts. I will never forget John. The last time I saw John he asked me when would I be going to the police academy. I told him I was scheduled to go in February, 2004 and he told me to let him know when I graduate so he could share the moment with me. He was always supportive of me and my career. I hope to graduate and when I do, I will be thinking of John and his words of encouragement. He is so very sorely missed and I do not think that there are any words to adequately express the void that is felt by all who knew him.

To my guys and gals of the Clifton Police Department, all my love, all my thoughts and prayers are with you all that God be with each of you always.

          -Sincerely,

          -JayJay

Thank you Johnny for the gifts that you have shared with me: Your Mom, your Dad, your brother, you sisters, your nephews, nieces, friends and the many wonderful men and women you work with and for.

God certainly draws straight lines using crooked arrows!

"We seem to give them back to you, O Lord who first gave them to us... but just as You did not lose them by their giving so we do not lose them by their return."

May the choirs of angels welcome you in the new and eternal Jerusalem!  Rest in Peace Johnny!

A Very Special Message from John's Sister MaryEllen

My Sunday school teacher once told me that someone had asked this question:  “Other than Jesus, if you could name anyone you felt was a hero, who would that be?”  My answer would be my brother Officer John Charles Samra, who lived his life as Jesus did.

Matt.25:31-46 – For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you invited me in, naked and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me… As a police officer, John continuously came to the aid of others in need.  During one of his evening shifts, he found a lost child roaming the streets…  Another young boy had his bicycle stolen; he wrote up the report and the next day, he bought the child a new bike.  He fed his friends and family by cooking for them (as well as cleaning up afterwards).  My brother John was often spoken about by others who said he was so generous that he would give you the shirt off his back and the belt off his pants (fellow officer in the Color Guard).  When elderly citizens needed medical assistance, he took them to the hospital and stayed with them to comfort them, not unlike all other policemen, but especially like Jesus, Who said He will never leave us or forsake us…Looking back, there are so many similarities between John Charles and Jesus Christ.  Not only were their mothers both named Mary, but they even shared the same initials, J.C.  They both lived to serve others, saw the good in others when most people could not, never spoke poorly of anyone, and ultimately laid down their lives for others by dying a horrible death at a young age.

John lived his life in the Spirit.  He possessed the fruits of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Gal. 5:22)  He was also an adventurous young man who enjoyed motorcycling, camping, and skiing.  John was brought up in the Catholic Church and was taught these great values by his parents Mary and Michael, Sr., who truly practice what they preach – loving, giving, caring, serving, compassionate…  We do not grieve as others who have no hope. (I Thess 4:13-18) Like Jesus Who came to seek and to save, (Luke 19:1-10) John believed in carrying out his duties to protect and serve.  He did these with respect for people of all walks of life, of various ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs.  Though he could not perform miracles as Jesus did, he came to the aid of anyone who came into his life.  He participated in the Special Olympics, Safety Day for Clifton city children, Otto the Auto, and even volunteered to be Detective/Sgt. McGruff, a dog, because of his love for children. All these he did because he was living out his life as Christ Jesus said… Do “Unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  (Matt. 7-12) What would Johnny do?  Johnny would do as Jesus taught us to do, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable… Whatever you have learned or received or heard from Me, or -seen in Me – put it into practice.  And the God of peace will be with you.” (Phil. 4:8-9)

Today we have been deprived of watching our son, our brother, our uncle grow up and continue to bless our lives, as he became a blessing to all who came in contact with him.  Our family is truly thankful that John was part of our lives even if it was for such a short time.

Rest in Peace, baby brother John.  See you in heaven.

          -Love,

          -MaryEllen

My deepest sympathy goes out to John's family and his brothers in Clifton.  Remember, although life ends prematurely at times, the heart and soul of good person never dies.  John died protecting others, but the memory of the sacrafice he made will be remembered always.

          -John- Lincoln Park Police Dept.

I got this in the mail today and received such comfort in it I decided to share it with those who are grieving Johnny's death.

If a baby could think, it would be afraid of birth.  To leave the only world it knew would seem a kind of death in itself.  But immediately after birth the child would find itself in loving arms showered with affection and cared for at every moment.  The baby would say "I was foolish to doubt God's Plan for me.  This is a wonderful life."

For the Christian, passing through death is really a birth into a new and better life.  Those who are left behind should not grieve as if there were no hope.  Life is changed not taken away.  Our dear one lives on in a world beautiful beyond anything we can imagine.  With Jesus He awaits the day when he will welcome us with joy.

"Do not grieve too much" he would say to us.  "I am living and am still with you".

We will always have the wonderful memories of John.  He was a light that will never die.  Always remember him w/ a smile.

He was our family.  He was a father to my two children Katelyn and Melissa.   We miss him dearly but try to get through it remembering all the fun times we have had.  I want to thank all of you who have been with the family through all of this.

          -Sandi, Katie and Melissa

My deepest condolences go out to Officer Samra's family and the Clifton Police Department.   God bless and stay strong.

Officer John Samra,

"Johnny Cop" we can say without a shadow of a doubt that knowing you has been an honor and we are that much richer for that joyful experience.  Your presence at our wedding helped make the special event that much more wonderful and we will always look back on your participation with fond memories.  You exemplified the meaning of the word 'friend' in that we would go years between visits and we would pick-up where we left off, as if no time had passed. Every time we saw you we were greeted with pure joy.

Johnny, that summed up only a small portion of you - what you saw is what you got. It is not possible to list all the positive attributes you possessed. A super person that would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

We will miss you and always remember your great personality, your wit, kindness, and most of all, you. The sun has lost a little glow and the night is a little darker now that you are no longer with us. The earths' loss is heavens' gain.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

          -Tammy Stetz-Field

          -Michael Field

Many of us who had the privilege of knowing Johnny have lost a beloved friend, someone I have known for over 15 years. Johnny was a kind, fun-loving person who always wanted to have a good time. And good times we had, the Vegas trip when Bob got married, when you came over and cooked me dinner, New Year's Eve parties, but nothing beats the time when you showed up at a bachelorette party (b/c we were too loud and rowdy) and one of the girls thought you were the "dancer"! You will be forever missed, but never forgotten. My heart goes out to Johnny's family. RIP Johnny....

What is the meaning of "In The Line Of Duty"

It means that an officer made the Ultimate Sacrifice

It means that someone took an officer's life

A Hero has fallen

Officers who gave their all to protect and serve

have been killed by someone whom they swore to protect and serve

It means that their badge will no longer be on their chest and they will join

"The Best of The Best"

It means that family and friends are left behind to deal with the loss of a loved one

Only having the memories of that loved one close to their hearts

Something no one can ever take away

It means that family members will stand at the officer's grave and wonder why...

Why would someone take an officer's life and leave them there to die? If we only knew

Today an officer will place their badge on their chest to fulfill the dreams of heroes killed

"In The Line Of Duty"

          -Gonna miss ya, Johnny

Living in the city of Clifton, I see that our Officers are dedicated to keeping our city safe. I had taken the test to be a officer to help keep my city safe. The news of hearing that one of the "heroes" of my city passed away on Friday, in the line of duty, brought great sorrow to me. Sincerest condolences to all the family members that lost a loved one, and also to all the Law Enforcement Officers that lost a close friend.

This is a day of great sadness and grief for all Law Enforcement, a brother Officer has paid the ultimate price.  It should also remind each and every one of us of the inherent risks and humility of our chosen profession.  To the family, friends and fellow Officers, I offer prayers and thoughts.  Be strong, be proud and be safe.

It sounds like thunder far away, but the skies are blue and bright...
And soon they crest the hill nearby, and ride into our sight.
They shake the ground with powerful sound, and they make some hearts beat fast...

They look so proud and noble, like Knights come from the past.
Side by side, they always ride, and seem to move as one...
From early in the morning light, to the setting of the sun.
And children point and wave to them, from cars that pass them by...
And young ones ask their parents, why the men have mirrors for eyes.
They ride the roads, and fight for good, and defend small ones like you...
They ask to ride, and do with pride, and sometimes they are few.
Like men of steel, on silver wheels, they sparkle in the light...
then with a roar and rumble, they ride out of our sight.
Sometimes when one has fallen, never to ride again...
You can hear the others calling, like thunder on the wind.
Side by side, they slowly ride, and their thunder is a mournful sound...
And the mirrors hide their eyes from us, when teardrops fall to ground.
So if you see one riding, and you look into his face...
You see your reflection in his eyes, you know that you are safe.
For motormen are a special breed, they love to ride the wind...
And when you hear the thunder boom, the fallen ones ride again.
